Fit for the ‘flu season

by Liz N on July 30, 2012

I’ve taken  a break in transmission for a day or two, because I’ve been struck down by some sort of upper respiratory tract virus aka cold/flu.   I’m pretty sure it’s not influenza proper, because the fevers, aches and pains are subsiding pretty quickly.  In fact, I’m quite surprised that only after a day and a half, I’m beginning to feel as if I’m on the mend.

Of course, I’m wondering if I’m just lucky or whether an increased fitness level (though not to the point of overtraining, which can compromise the immune system)  plays a role in preventing colds and flu.

Thus I googled, “does increased fitness prevent colds/flu” and came up with a few stories that suggest that it does just that.  This BBC article suggests a 50% less chance of contracting a cold outcome if you exercise regularly.

Of course, good nutrition and good sleep hygiene will also play a role, but it’s encouraging to think that being a bit fitter than the average is helping me get over this cold faster.   Plus I’m having a lovely time resting up and being inspired by the Olympics!

Do you feel your fitness levels help or hinder your recovery from colds/flu?

Touch wood I’ve mostly escaped colds and flus so far. I had a few near misses, but have dosed up and kept them away.

I don’t think I’m that fit, so not sure if it has an impact but I’m very fortunate that – given my lack of fruit and veges etc I rarely get sick! (Well, other than the several autoimmune diseases I have!)

I definitely feel that being fit helps during my illness aswell as leading to a quicker recovery! Although I must admit that I soldier on, rather stupidly, with my exercise regime come rain, hail or near death :P

I hope you feel better soon Liz. I definitely think being fit helps avert illnesses, but I might be deluding myself with that (interesting to read the research) :)

I very rarely get sick (touch wood) and I think my fitness has a lot to do with it.

Hope you are feeling better! I am a reasonably fit person, who has lupus, but VERY RARELY gets the flu….until now. I strongly believe the fitter you are and the healthier your diet and lifestyle, the less chance of you getting sick. I can usually soldier on with my exercise regime…until now. Off to bed with some panadol!!

I hope you feel better soon Liz. I think people with a balanced diet (including lots of fresh produces) are less subject to sickness. Luckily I rarely get sick (although I don’t exercise that much)!

I think it’s true Liz, and had been pretty pleased that we’ve all been well… until two weeks ago when all three boys started getting the rounds of headache/fever/vomiting. It’s just boys’ germs tho as we gals haven’t had it … yet! Get well soon!

Bleugh. I never usually get sick, but I picked up what I thought was just a minor head cold and have been down and out for a week now.

I’m sure good nutrition and regular exercise have a preventative effect, but some bugs are just impossible to withstand.
