Recently I was contacted by the folks at Yurbuds Australia asking me the question, “did I find it frustrating when my ear phones popped out whilst I was working out?” The answer to this was “yes” as my regular old Apple ones do have the propensity to leave me just as I’m doing something really exciting, like a clean or a quick sprint.
Anyway, Yurbuds offered me the opportunity to trial their new sports earphone sets, which have been available for quite some time in the US, but have just arrived on our shores. They have been endorsed by the World Triathlon Corporation and the Yurbuds website is chock full of information about the headphones and the technology – from ear piece sizing, to fitting the headphones properly and other frequently asked questions. I am really impressed with their website and am going to enter the action photo contest they have running on Facebook – who wouldn’t love the opportunity to go to Kona to view this year’s Hawaii Ironman?
Now to the actual headphones themselves – it does take a little bit of practice to fit them, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. The ear pieces have a silicone attachment which allows you to “twist” them into place, so that they stay put. And stay put they did – I took them running and gave them a thorough trial over varying speeds and there was absolutely no movement whatsoever – perfect.
My other criteria for a good set of earphones is sound quality. I’m pretty fussy when comes to sound quality (must be because Mr Lucy is quite the audiophile) and I have to say, based on sound alone, the Yurbuds pass the test with flying colours. The sound is well balanced, it’s not too bass-y or treble-y and the music delivered was crisp and clear without being harsh.
The headphones come in this neat little wallet (see above) which makes them easy to store and locate in my gym bag.
Overall, I was really impressed with these earphones and would be very happy to recommend them for all types of workouts, with perhaps the exception of swimming.
They are available at Myer and Rebel Sport nationally.

So many songs to choose from. I love dance music to workout to and one of my faves is from Body Attack 72 (I think), “Do Ya Love Your Hardcore” or the Will I Am/Jennifer Lopez/Mick Jagger song T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)
Very timely question Liz!…just this morning I was driving and heard Fall Out Boy’s “I don’t care what you think (as long as it’s about me)”…I used to love playing this song a couple of years back when I was lifting heavy because I usually got a few disapproving looks from some of the ladies who thought women who lift heavy get “too big”…LOL. But I was in the zone doing my thing so I didn’t care what they thought
You will think I am crazy but favourite work out song is by Drop Kick Murphies and is Johnny I hardly knew ya!. Crazy interval type music that is a little bit irish and a little bit punk. Not something you hear everyday but it helps me beat the stairmaster – and anything that does that – just plain Rocks!
I am not afraid to admit that one song that always pushes me thru another km running is Miley Cyrus “see you again”! Just has this amazing beat that makes me bop my head and push thru the pain!
Hey Liz, how do I pick when I have so many favourite songs for different parts of my workout! However, my ultimate power-up-any-hill; sprint-to-the-finish-line tune would have to be ‘State of Love and Trust’ by the wonderful Pearl Jam.
Badly in need of some earbuds so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
“let’s get loud” J-Lo – cheesy, but a toe tapper and just gets me moving. And Adam Lambert’s “strut” – something about that beat requires big weights to be lifted!
New Attitude by the Young Divas. A great running song when there’s just nothing left in the tank.
I’m on a 90′s music kick when running lately, after they played some at pump. So “Gonna Make You Sweat by C+C Music Factory” works at the moment.
Liz, at the moment I’m into Nicki Minaj as we do some of her stuff in my faux Zumba class. I basically only use my iPhone’s iPod for exercise so the stuff on there is changed regularly and usually reflects current hits and things I want to exercise to. My poor brother was subjected to Nicki, Timomatic, LMFAO, Pitbull etc on our recent trip home.
The headphones sound great! Mine always fall out of my ears!
I am loving the whole album from The Black Keys at the moment for my workout. Its fun, uplifting and pretty dancey. I like listening to “alternative” music so its nice to have something I actually enjoy listening to when I work out.
My gym always used to play “Eye of the Tiger” to finish off a hard session – always got me to the end
I love Foo Fighters – Learn to Fly, Liz…. I find it a really inspirational song actually, great beat and I just love the film clip. The song makes me happy. Will look up the website, I have so much trouble with earphones, my lugholes are really tiny, my apple earphone are way to big and keep falling out, or I have to take them out as I start getting pressure ulcers!!!! Thought I had already liked your page, woops, have now.
Has to be ‘Paradise City’ by the Gunners. On or off the bike – power on
Dont laugh!!
It’s Chocolate Starfish version of ‘you’re so vain’ . it gets me moving every time!!!
You probably think this song is about you,
You’re so vain…
I bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you dont you…
I love that song, thanks for reminding me of it!!
“Happy” by Leona Lewis The last bit of a run, when it is hurting and you just have to push and push… it reminds of how far I have come to get where I am today, how many times I’ve stood on the edge and taken that step into fear, and the end result.. Happiness!
My fav song to run to is ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta, it always me run that little bit faster and keeps me going when my body wants to stop!
Hmmm I agree so many to choose from, and as much as I love a good fast paced song, there is something about climbing the hills around my place to Michael Buble singing “Feeling Good!”
In the spirit of the upcoming Olympics, it’s all about music that’s inspiring and from deep within, and what could be better than listening to Chariots of Fire by Vangelis.
At the moment mine is ACDC – Back in Black!! Love this song, awesome strong song (best beat and guitar work) that pushes me to train to the next level and not quit!
Like.
I’ve heard good reviews about this product from a lot of US bloggers.
I watch episodes of the Amazing Race on my ipod while I run on the treadmill. I find it way more motivating than music because a) I have something to look at other than the backs of other sweaty people, and b) I’ve always wanted to be on the show so I can kind of live vicariously
As a very overweight and unfit 50 year old, I decided it was time to get my backside into gear (literally) and join a gym. Going well but oooohhhhh it is hard and it hurts. My favourite song to listen to is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, ‘I Won’t Back Down’. When it gets to the line, “You can stand me up at the gates of hell but I won’t back down!” I’m mentally going “Yeah!!!!” Hopefully, it will soon start to feel more like heaven than hell!
I like to listen to “Im sexy and I know it” (LMFAO) for my Zumba workouts!
I’m a Roller Derby girl, so Roll On by The Living End, because it makes me “Roll on with my head held high!”
Firestarter by Prodigy. I like it as the beat amps up my workout or run Amps up. I usually put it on a playlist about 5k from the end of a run to light me up again.
Oh yes! I have to have some Prodigy on my workout playlist!
40-something? Well you look awesome! Most inspiring! I am 40 year after next, love to see that it’s all still possible after my second baby is born in Nov
My running is on hold atm but, I do love to run, despite dodgy knees. (grr). For me, it’s anything upbeat by Bon Jovi. I’m a fan from the old days, all their tracks make me buzz and keep me going when I think I’ve got nothing left in me

A surprising one for a mild-mannered 50+ girl perhaps, but it always gets me jogging along at a decent pace full of determination…
AC/DC’s “THUNDERSTRUCK”!!!

This is such an exciting post! I have been struggling with this exact problem…earbuds falling out…it drives me totally insane! At the moment the song that really motivates me when I can’t really be bothered is “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes. I’m sure it will be used a lot during the Olympics! My favourite running song at the moment (don’t laugh) is ‘Livin la Vida Loca’ by Ricky Martin because it is the perfect match beat wise for my current running pace (I have to run in time to the beat….I can’t help it!)
shared and tweeted!
Ok Well I no doubt will be howled down for this ( and I rarely put this out there publicly) but my favourite songs are:
Long Way to the TOP by ACDC (driving to the gym for motivation)
Robbie Williams – Let Me Entertain You ( when running)
White Wedding (Billie Idol) – prior to boxing for motivation
Chariots of Fire ( on my way home from the gym when I am feeling fabulous for a job well done)
No I am not joking I am serious……stop laughing!
Awesome list Rebecca!!! Love them all!!
Just Got To Get Out of This Place……. not exactly workout music but it’s a bit of a mantra, reminding me to workout hard to keep myself in shape or I’m not going to like where I end up.
I’ve liked & shared on FB
I love anything with Eminem it helps motivate me when I am doing my weight training. I really like the Recovery CD.
I like you on facebook
following on twitter and RT
Edge of Glory by Lady Gaga
Great tempo for the crosstrainer.
Great lyrics keep my focused when weight training.
I’m on the “Edge of Glory” while I’m training to create the best version of me and achieve my goals.
Wow, even if I don’t win the earphones, some great suggestion for workout music!!!
Well, I’m bucking the trend here, I never listen to music when exercising, only to podcasts, from ABC and BBC mainly, plus TED talks. I learn such a lot, but maybe I’d go faster with music??
How good are the yurbuds? I have the Inspire Duro with dry mic and it is the best set I have ever owned! They never fall out and the the dry mic has controls for me to turn my music up and down or answer the phone.
My best workout song has to be anything from Calvin Harris!
I feel I may be coming out of the closet a bit with this one .. Please don’t hold it against me.
The last song on my 45 min run playlist is “Eye of the Tiger” and I use it to push me up the hill to our driveway. “Prisoner of Society” by The Living End also gets me to pace out a bit and the fun one .. wait for it “Man, I feel like a Woman” Shania Twain … it may be time to change my playlist …
Oh yeah…Eurythmics with SISTERS ARE DOING FOR THEMSELVES. I really love the beat and it always gets me a steady 6klms per hour on the treadmill. It’s the tune that gets me motivated at the gym and when ‘trying’ to vacuum the carpet with a bit of rhythm….:)
How did I manage to not enter this after I shared it? hahaha.
My favourite is ‘Sweat’ by CC music factory (STILL). Yep. old school!
Hi Liz, I have finally returned to blogland after a little (ok a large break) and i find you running this fabulous competition. So many songs to pick from but one that i love when i’m fadding fast is Black Betty. Somehow as i’m about to fly off the back of the treadmill it gives me the extra ummpphhh to race on and finish what i started.
My favorite workout song is ‘silence’ by tiesto because it puts me In a euphoric state when working out
