Do you find inspiration for your own training when the Olympics roll around? I admit to happily putting my hand up and lapping the Games up every four years – and find myself getting all emotional and inspired by the inevitable stories of courage and determination that invariably happen during each Games.
I’ve also been enjoying watching the Tour De France and marvelling at the condition and fitness of the riders as they tackle the French terrain. It’s also started me developing a hankering for going on a cycling tour in France – a girl can dream eh? Seriously though, I think there’s nothing better than combining fitness and holidays and a cycling tour is definitely on my ‘bucket’ list.
Thus, sleep may be on the backburner in the next few weeks – however, it’s all all bad as there are a few Olympic sports I won’t stay up for.
Sports like..
- badminton and table tennis (too quick!)
- shooting and archery (accuracy has never been my strong point!)
and…
- sailing (can’t see the little specks on the water!)
However, I really love watching…
- Track cycling (love the power, the athleticism and did I mention the legs?)
- Swimming (I’m an Aussie, through and through)
- Men’s Gymnastics (watching them on the rings is nothing short of amazing, even if the outfits er..leave little to the imagination
- Athletics (everything from track and field to the marathon)
- Weightlifting (when I compare what an elite woman lifts and my tiddly weights, I am seriously in awe)
What’s on your list of Olympic must sees? What sport might you sleep through?

Hey Liz, I love watching the Olympics too, both summer and winter! They are very inspiring, the talent of the athletes is amazing!
My fav sports to watch are the triathlon and marathon, all athletics, cycling, gymnastics, diving, swimming.
The ones I can miss more easily are shooting, bowling, table tennis.
Some new sporting things I would get a real kick out of achieving are, being able to achieve a, or a few chin ups, accomplishing the splits, becoming more skilled at poledancing as skilled dancers are pleasing to watch! Lots of work for me as none of that comes naturally at all!
Hi Pip, I’m glad you are as inspired I am. I’m too scared of pole dancing
CYCLING, CYCLING, CYCLING!! But you knew that
TDF followed by the Olympics makes for a very tired me.
Can’t wait to see the track cycling especially, MTB and the road race will also be great. Can’t beat the excitement and speed of the track though.
I agree the gymnastics are amazing. Love seeing and Iron Cross.
Geez, Amanda, even I knew that and I barely know you. That was a sheer given. LOL
Yes, I can’t wait for the CYCLING, CYCLING, CYCLING either!
Gee, can’t say I hide my passions!
Oh, and my club sponsors Nettie Edmondson (she’s lovely!), plus half the track squad are from Adelaide – I train on the same velodrome as them, and it makes me feel like an athlete
Love it
Ugh, I’m not looking forward to the Olympics – purely because I’m living here! This week they did a test run of the undergrounds as to what it will be like during the Olympics. It did NOT go well. My line (which sees 900,000 passengers on a regular day anyway!) was hit particularly hard, and there were severe delays. We don’t have a TV so I don’t know how much of the Olympics I’ll be seeing, unless I watch it at the gym! haha obviously weight lifting is a big favourite of mine, and I love the gymnastics too
You’ll have to give us a blow by blow update
Except the mens’ gymnastics, nothing. I’d rather go cheer on someone nearby who needs the cheering; like some random woman doing a half walk-run for the first time, or a newby at the gym.
I love the iron cross move – someone else mentioned it – amazing!
I’m an Olympic tragic too. Have been since the Munich Olympics. I love it all right from the opening ceremony till the close. I was hoping that one of my rhythmic costumes would be worn over in London this year but my girl, who’s national champion, didn’t do so well in the selection trial. My son has a little to do with the strength-training some of the St Peters Western swimmers so the swimming is definitely on the must-see list. Go Megan Nay!
That’s so exciting that you have some connections. Yoly Kukkla trains at Riverside where I take a few PT clients – and yep, definitely hope the St Peters squad do really well x
Liz, I have to confess I care little about the Olympics. (Less about the Commonwealth Games.) I guess once upon a time I used to watch the swimming finals etc and suspect I would now, but I’m afraid I’m a bit ‘meh’.
Deb
Oh Deb, each to his own I guess xx
Liz, we are the same in our house .. a TV has been shifted into the bedroom to enable us to watch the Tour and the Olympics. I do not normally condone TV in the rooms but I’ll make an exception for the Tour each year! I’m just not sure if I’m happy about the amount of late nights I’ve been having or will be having for the next month! I love all the swimming, diving, T & F, cycling .. you know, all the fun stuff
I think that’s a brilliant idea – and I’m so glad that I just found the subscription form for your blog, so now I am all good to go
I’m there with you on the late nights! Every July is the same, and this year it extends to August. You can tell at work who is watching
Agreed
I’ll definitely be up for the gymnastics (women’s and men’s) and athletics (esp. running). I like the swimming and diving too, and the opening ceremony to kick it all off.
Hi Kari, I had forgotten about the diving – I love it too!
Love the gymnastics. It all started with Martina Navratilova long long ago!!
