I have a few weaknesses and one of them is the old kitchen gadget. When the girls were babies and I had to get up during the night to feed them, I would often sit in front of the telly and watch whatevr was available – and usually it was informercials from companies like Demtel (they of the famous, “free set of steak knives with every purchase made in the next 24 hours” line). Often they would be demonstrating items for your kitchen such as magic steamers, defrosters, cookers and the like.
I’m pleased to say that during this time I restrained myself, however I have retained a love of kitchen doodads – my most recent purchases have been an ice cream maker , potato ricer, a hand mixer (even though I own a big Kenwood) and this nifty looking veggie twister which I tried out on the little Lucys tonight – inspired by Dani, who blogs at Fitness, Food and Style. I made zucchini ‘spaghetti’ which was very well received. My biggest challenge is remembering to use all this great gear.
Of course I have had some duds as well such as the ‘Sushezi’ sushi maker that I received as a gift last year. Mr Lucy was quite bemused when I was getting cranky about my lack of success with it. Therefore, I had to throw it at him. I believe he’s taken to the shed, where he makes the odd sushi roll if he gets the chance. What can I say, but ‘roll with a bamboo sheet’ the whole way!
Have you got a kitchen appliance that you simply cannot do without? That helps you prepare meals in a healthy way?
My most used kitchen appliance would have to be my digital food scales, followed closely by my kettle!

You made me laugh Liz! I have also one of these twisty things in the pic but I rarely use it. I recently also purchased an ice cream machine and a potato ricer to make gnocchi, I really really would like a slow cooker…. I love love love kitchen gadgets – it is all in the name of research and passing on information to others obviously!! My most used appliance is also my digital scales. I got them ages ago when I was practicing aromatherapy and making my own skin care products. Now they are totally dedicated to food prep.
Hi Liz! Well, my husband is Korean. My kids tell me that sushi is made well when the rice has the perfect amount of stickiness. Get the tuna from a meat store that specializes in it. And the bamboo rollers with a piece of plastic wrap makes wrapping easier. Plus, it helps to have an Asian friend who is good at it to demonstrate.
I find the bamboo mats much easier to use
I love fresh tuna as well.
The only real gadgets I have are used on a very daily basis – a sunbeam espresso machine, george foreman and ‘alligator’ for slicing vegies. Couldn’t live with out any of them but am saving up for a
Thermomix!
I’ve seen those “alligators” – are they any good?
Hello, I have a veggie twister and love the results, great for making a veggie base for spaghetti bol instead of pasta. My best appliance is the Thermomix, but small digital scales have been invaluable too.
I wish I owned a Thermomix
Hi! New follower on board from DP and absolutely inspired and in awe of your achievements. Looking forward to catching up on your posts.

Hi Crissy,
What a lovely thing to say – thanks so much – popped over to your blog and I’m sorry that I have no advice for your party but think you are extremely brave
xx Liz N
My rice cooker is my absolute favourite kitchen appliance (apart from the kettle and toaster – can’t get by without a good cuppa and toast). But I’m also quite fond of my electric mixer – icing and cupcakes are so much easier to make with it.
Yes, good toast is essential – preferably with raisins
I have to exercise a lot of self-control to avoid our gadget collection expanding. Having a small kitchen helps – if I ever have a big kitchen there’ll be no hope for me!! My favourite is my food processor, big and expensive as that is, but the kettle is an important one too for sure.
Now, on this veggie twister, I adore it and I think it may even fit in my cupboards…:P Where did you find it?
Hey Kari, I got it from Robins Kitchen but if you google “veggie twister” I am sure some online shops would come up
Ah, the kitchen gadgets that gather dust… I got loads of those, the most useless being a pasta cooker that only uses boiled water (doesn’t work!!). But I’ve also bought ones that are invaluable – my favourites are my mixmaster and my huge slowcooker. My hubby loves the popcorn maker:P
However, my most used appliance is like yours Liz – my kettle – a plain white $9 job from Kmart that gets boiled at least 10 times a day!!
This vegie twister looks interesting as I only ever used a very sharp peeler for my vegetable ‘spaghetti’ and have lost some skin in the process – Eewww..
Hey Em, I got it from RObins (on special)
You may borrow it if yo ulike
I’m not a big gadget girl, but then again I’m not a big cooking girl either…. Sharp knife and cutting board is probably it for me!

A good cutting board works for me too
