“Ministry of Silly Walks” in my own backyard…

by Liz N on May 17, 2011

Have you ever been in the gym or outdoors  perhaps and seen someone performing exercises that you could only dream about doing?

There’s been the “planking” craze – which reminds me of my days at University where we used to go out of our way to be a little bit silly (thinking here of the guys that used to collect “Stop” signs on drunken nights out and put them in their apartments) amongst others.

Some of the exercises are dangerous – for example I met a lovely Muslim woman who joined the gym and came to my RPM class in the middle of summer dressed in a burqa.  Now I don’t have anything against burqas, however riding on a bike with an exposed chain in the middle of summer with an excess of material everywhere is obviously not the greatest of ideas.

Some weird looking exercises actually have a benefit – I’m thinking here of some of the pilates moves that I teach.

However there are just some things that defy belief.

Here goes….

Our street is popular route for many walkers.  However there is one guy that stands out…..

He walks down the street backwards every morning at exactly the same time every day…..

Uh, yeah…a bonafide card carrying member of the “Ministry of Silly Walks”.  John Cleese would be so proud.

What weird and wonderful exercises do you see bandied around in your workout experience – can anyone top my walking guy?

I see a guy who leaves the treadmill running and gets off and goes outside for a smoke – he is only there for a total of 30 mins – now Im not sure what to call that! Many words spring to mind Im just not sure which one fits ‘right’

I like the walking backwards down the road!

That’s funny – I’ve seen the same thing – fagging outside the gym!

Um…I can’t exactly talk. I am often seen walking backwards on a treadmill, or even more amusing to some (I’m sure), using the stepper backwards…lol

Actually Vix, I do remember you stepping backwards and thinking at the time that I couldn’t do that – I’d likely fall off the darn thing :) xx

Yes, and you don’t want to stare too hard as these poor people try to work out what’s going on!
